Easy Tips for Making Your Small Business More Visible on Social Media

Everyone wants their small business to be more visible on social media. More followers and publicity means more eyes on your business, which (hopefully) translates to higher revenue and growth. There’s a big difference between wanting and achieving, however, and most of that difference consists of some hard work and know-how. Here are a couple of ideas on building a more visible presence on your chosen social media platforms.

Create More Visual Content

When you’re surfing Facebook, do you see a lot of posts that are only words? Probably not, and part of that is probably because you don’t particularly enjoy looking at them. Most other people are the same. Even though an article or a long post can convey your message better, it’s hard to get potential customers to engage with it as much as they might with a piece of visual content. Humans, after all, are visual creatures who can process an image much faster than they can text. Not only is that a good reason to have a great logo (which you can design for free here!), it’s also a good reason to put together videos or infographics. A short video showing people the benefit of your product can do more than a whole page of text for your bottom line and your social media visibility.

Utilize Paid Advertising

It’s frustrating, but paid advertising is paid for a reason. Social media platforms will boost your ads if you pay for them, getting them in front of a larger number of people than your page would by itself. It may not be a fully organic way to grow your following, and a lot of those people might not end up buying from you, but it is definitely a way to boost your online visibility quickly. You can start out small with a low marketing budget while you figure out what works and what doesn’t, and if you use it correctly, paid advertising can be quite beneficial to your burgeoning business.

Learn SEO Principles

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the concept of getting a page to the top of a Google search. The vast majority of internet users only look at the first page of Google search results, meaning if your social media profile isn’t on there, you’re in trouble. There’s a lot that goes into SEO, and this certainly isn’t an exhaustive guide, but here are a few tips as to what gets pages to the top of Google results:

  • Number of backlinks to your page
  • Video/image content
  • Keywords that meet the “intent” behind a search
  • Improve your page speed
  • Improve your site’s customer experience

There are a number of other factors Google uses to determine search results and implementing them can help you land closer to the top. Once visitors find your page, you can then point them towards your social media profiles to get them to follow you on a regular basis. Then, it’s just a matter of consistently posting great content to keep them following.

Don’t Get Too Controversial

Some businesses thrive on controversy, but the vast majority of small businesses make their mark by trying not to offend anyone. If you’re using your business profile to talk about politics, for example, it’s a quick way to get a bunch of potential customers to unfollow you. Nobody’s telling you to avoid anything that’s even remotely controversial, but the big topics, like religion and politics, should probably be verboten unless they’re a part of your marketing plan. You have too much to lose and not much to gain by wading into those treacherous waters.
